MRD Industrial Switches in Xinjiang Kalpin 400MW CSP Project

Published: 2026-09-20

Building a 400MW concentrated solar power (CSP) and energy storage station on the Gobi Desert means the communication network must face not only the tests on a technical parameter sheet, but also a 40°C temperature difference between day and night, surface temperatures exceeding 70°C, wind‑sand and saline‑alkali erosion, and the nearly stringent deterministic requirements of the energy storage system for data transmission. This article takes the Xinjiang Kalpin 400MW CSP energy storage project as a sample to analyze how MRD industrial switches address the extreme Gobi environment and the communication challenges of energy storage systems, providing reliable support for industrial networks under a multi‑energy complementary architecture.

I. Project Background and Core Challenges

The Kalpin project integrates PV, CSP, and 16,000 MWh ultra‑large‑capacity energy storage, representing a typical multi‑energy complementary architecture. In this complex “PV + CSP + energy storage” system, the industrial network faces three challenges.

First, extreme environmental heterogeneity. The Gobi day‑night temperature difference exceeds 40°C, summer surface temperatures can reach above 70°C, and wind‑sand and saline‑alkali erosion are severe. Communication equipment must operate stably in this environment over the long term, without performance degradation due to temperature fluctuations or dust ingress.

Second, network oscillation and islanding risk. Data flow between the energy storage BMS (Battery Management System), PCS (Power Conversion System), and the CSP heliostat field control system is enormous. Once packet loss occurs or ring network self‑healing is too slow, it will directly lead to misjudgment of the charge/discharge strategy, affecting station operation safety.

Third, high‑precision clock synchronization requirements. To avoid protection misoperation, the entire network must support IEEE 1588v2 high‑precision clock synchronization, ensuring timing consistency between fault recording and precise machine tripping.

II. Breaking Boundaries for Interconnection and Win‑Win New Economy

In response to the above challenges, the project deployed MRD managed industrial Ethernet switches and rack‑mounted aggregation equipment, building a non‑disruptive redundant ring network covering the entire station.

Wide Temperature and Protection: The Baseline of Industrial‑Grade Hardware

The MRD products deployed in the project all come standard with –40°C to +85°C wide‑temperature operation, an aluminum alloy fanless heat dissipation design, and a protection rating of IP40 or above. In the wind‑sand environment of Kalpin, the equipment is coated with conformal coating, effectively resisting condensation and salt spray corrosion, ensuring long‑term stable operation.

MRD‑Ring Private Ring Protocol: The Core of Ultimate Reliability

This is the key differentiator of the communication solution in the project. Traditional RSTP self‑healing time is in the range of seconds, while the MRD‑Ring private ring protocol compresses the entire network self‑healing time to within 20 milliseconds. In a network with thousands of communication nodes, even if the main fiber is cut by construction, the back‑end SCADA system hardly perceives link jitter, truly achieving “zero packet loss” transmission.

Precise Clock Synchronization: Deep Integration of IEC 61850

For the relay protection and fault analysis needs of the energy storage substation, MRD switches fully support the IEC 61850 industry standard. Through hardware timestamping, clock synchronization accuracy is locked at the sub‑microsecond level, ensuring strict consistency of massive battery cluster voltage and current data in the time dimension. In the compact and strong electromagnetic interference environment of the energy storage prefabricated cabin, the industrial‑grade anti‑electromagnetic interference design of MRD switches withstood the impact of high‑power converter start‑stop, achieving a 100% control signaling packet reception rate. This solution provides a transparent, low‑latency data pipeline for the remote operation and maintenance center, greatly reducing the customer's routine inspection costs in the Gobi no‑man's land.
