In the Youjiang River basin of Guangxi, a long‑operating hydropower plant is undergoing a smart transformation. The Naji Hydropower Plant, an important run‑of‑river station on the upper Youjiang section of the Yujiang River, has a total installed capacity of 66 MW and has been delivering clean electricity to the local grid since its commissioning in 2008. With increasingly stringent security requirements for power monitoring systems, the plant initiated a computer monitoring system upgrade. MRD, with its outstanding industrial‑grade reliability, has injected new vitality into the "neural center" of this veteran power station.

The Naji Hydropower Plant is located in Napo Town, Tianyang District, Baise City, approximately 41.4 km from the Baise urban area, and has been in operation for many years. As the Cybersecurity Law of the People's Republic of China and the security protection requirements for power monitoring systems of China Southern Power Grid continue to escalate, the plant has imposed higher demands on the stability, security, and real‑time performance of its monitoring system.
This upgrade involves not only hardware updates such as servers and workstations, but also a comprehensive optimization of the communication network to ensure reliable transmission of protection signals, telemetry, and remote signaling data, meeting the stringent grid dispatch compliance requirements for grid‑connected power plants in terms of cybersecurity.
II. Project Requirements

In this smart upgrade of an aging power plant, MRD industrial switches were deployed in the monitoring system, undertaking the critical task of connecting protection devices, measurement and control units, and the host computer system.
A Reliable Partner for Harsh Environments: The turbine hall of a hydropower plant is characterized by high humidity, dense equipment layout, and strong electromagnetic interference. MRD industrial switches feature a fully enclosed metal housing with a fanless design, supporting a wide operating temperature range from –40°C to +85°C and an IP40 protection rating. They readily cope with the high humidity and complex electromagnetic environment in the hall, ensuring stable and uninterrupted communication links.
Millisecond‑Level Self‑Healing for Safety: To meet the stringent "zero interruption" requirement of power monitoring systems, MRD switches support ring network redundancy technology, enabling fault self‑healing and path switching within 50 milliseconds. This feature is crucial for hydropower plants – whether it is interference caused by unit start/stop or unexpected link failures, the real‑time transmission of protection signals remains unaffected.
Compliant and Secure Network Foundation: The project strictly adheres to the security protection regulations for power monitoring systems. MRD switches support security policies such as port‑based VLAN isolation and ACL access control, effectively achieving logical isolation between the production control zone and the management information zone, providing the underlying support for the plant to meet grid cybersecurity compliance requirements.
